Breitling
Limited Anniversary Edition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Breitling's first launch into space.
Scott Carpenter was the first American astronaut to wear a wristwatch into orbit.
Carpenter approached Breitling to produce a modified version of the Navitimer for his orbital flight. The astronaut suggested Breitling keep the Navitimer's unique circular slide rule for making flight calculations but replace its tachymeter dial with a 24-hour dial.
Carpenter's Aurora 7 spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean about 250 miles off course which resulted in Carpenter and his Navitimer being submerged in the ocean. The watch was not waterproof so Carpenter returned it to Breitling for repair. In Lieu of repair Breitling instead presented Carpenter with a new Navitimer Cosmonaute, the production model he had inspired.
To this day the whereabouts of the original watch that orbited the earth are unknown.
Limited to just 1,962 pieces in honor of the year the watch and astronaut flew. It is manually winding with a 24 hour dial. The caseback features a Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion scale and is etched with a commemorative logo for the Aurora 7 mission.
